Active & Independent Education Limited (A&I) is an affiliated company of CityU Enterprises Limited established in 2006, with a focus on the development and deployment of an International award winning web-based English learning system (WELS) for local schools.She aims to "Build a Harmonic, Enthusiastic and Positive Learning Community for Teaching and Learning in our local schools". Based on the WELS e-learning and e-community building platform, a CAPABEL (CAPAcity Building and E-Learning) community of local schools called WELNET has been established. , WELNET is composed of a group of enthusiastic educators commit to provide quality education in Hong Kong.

Through close collaboration between teachers on either school-based or territory-based, challenges come with the drastic changes in the education reform become energetic.

Regarding teachers enormous professional tasks, WELNET provides a one-stop solution to enhance teaching and learning effectiveness through:

i) An Award Winning Education System;

ii) Multiple Pedagogical approaches for various teaching and learning activities;

iii) Interactive multimedia educational contents for diverse learning needs; and more importantly

iv) Professional Consultation Services for School-based IT-rich Curricular Design and Development in a series of continuous professional development programme.

Currently, A&I is collaborating with the AIMtech Centre (Centre for Innovative Application of Internet and Multimedia Technologies) of City University of Hong Kong on the Collaborative Blended Learning Curriculum Design and Development Programme funded by the Quality Education Fund. Over 160 Chinese Language and English Language teachers in primary and secondary schools are being trained and is going to equip the essential E-pedagogical competencies to promote life-long learning as well as whole person development.

Teacher participants are expected to be able to review, try out and evaluate different e-pedagogical approaches as well as design, implement and evaluate their school-based curricula that integrate traditional face-to-face teaching with online learning and teaching in action research and various experimental studies.

To stimulate and integrate the use of a web-based education system (WELS) with our existing conventional/formal education settings effectively and efficiently.

To promote collaboration among schools through addressing concerns and studying the effectiveness of web-based learning in key learning areas.

To promote or encourage schools to work collaboratively towards our education reform.

To empower teachers e-pedagogy competence and facilitate collaborative curriculum designs at all levels.

Projects Overview

Web-based learning and mobile learning are two of the maturing paradigms for supporting flexible, constructive and innovative teaching and learning in a blended learning environment. To demonstrate the potential impacts of these technologies in formal teaching as well as self-paced learning and assessments, Active & Independent Education Limited has developed the Web-based English Learning System (WELS) and Mobile Administrative and Assessment System (MAAS).
